“fresh air was, for me, a very important project. it holds a kind of balance between sounding how i wanted it to and being full of happy accidents i never could have predicted.  

recently we were planning set lists for our upcoming tour and i had to go back through the track listings of my old records, and there were songs on there i had forgotten about that i still really like, deep cuts that we couldn’t properly translate into a live setting.  there were a few demos on cassette i had recorded at home, but most of it was composed in the studio where Jackson and i recorded everything, down the road from where i was living in montreal at the time.  his hand in the recording process was so valuable, i’m very grateful that he was there to help the record come together.  right before we went to new york for the mastering sessions, salina and i discovered bed bugs in our apartment, and pretty much the moment i got back from new york we got rid of the bulk of our stuff and moved out of the apartment we had been living in for 3ish years.  soon after, the studio where we recorded and mixed the album fell apart and everyone involved took their gear and split.  between those two endings all the master and demo tapes were, as far as i’m aware, lost forever.  i hadn’t really thought about it until writing this, but that was a pretty pivotal moment in my life, an end to the settings where my first three records were written, recorded, mixed, and rehearsed. some of the songs have grown with the band as we’ve performed them live, and i rarely think of them outside the context of the live setting, but i’m quite proud of this album, and so glad people seem to like it still.”
